The Example of Epaphroditus

Timothy Jensen

"But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need. . . Receive him then in the Lord with all joy and hold men like him in high regard; because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me."
Philippians 2:25, 29-30

There are many Bible characters who receive little or no recognition. Chances are you have never heard of Epaphroditus, or you vaguely remember seeing his name once or twice. What we know about him should be an inspiration to all Christians.

Paul called Epaphroditus his brother in Christ. Paul also referred to him as a fellow worker: he was a faithful servant of Christ. Lastly, Epaphroditus was a fellow soldier: he courageously spread the gospel.

He was not afraid to risk his life in order to bring the Philippian church's offering to Paul (Phil. 4:18). Even when he became seriously ill, he was more concerned about Paul and the other believers than for himself.

Truly men like Epaphroditus should be held "in high regard." Are you willing to follow his example and be a faithful soldier for the Lord?
